Elapsed time: 02:47:26
Country: Argentina
Start 09:06am. 16c, no wind, allmost clear. At intersection of Ave. El Libertador & Av. Bartolome Mitre in San Rafael city, on hwy. 188/143 to Mendoza. Finish 12:25pm, 22c, l. wind and some clouds. At black & white km-marker "km 697" on hwy. 143 to Mendoza.
Mountains ahead !
After the first 10km of running out of San Rafael city (which is one of the wine-centers of Argentina - see pic. in yesterdays report) I turned around a 90c bend and there they were: The peaks of the Andes Mountains, 5000-6900m. high, the snow shining in the bright sun, the lower ranges below them w. several volcanic cones in clear shape. A view which were taken in and appreciated step by step the rest of the stage :-)
Still the run was a short one. Only 30km. Most likely this will be the average for the next 7 to 10 days - the packet w. running shoes & supplies from home has now been held/'gone' in Argentinian customs in Bournes Aires 1 month and by now injuries to the right knee, left achilles and shin-inflammation in the r. leg has begun.
Ecco and the danish embassy is doing a Much Appreaciated work in trying to request the packet from Argentinian authorities but so far its not possible (by the way I have been very positively surprised by the outstanding support I recieved from danish embassies in the Middle East and Africa during the first half of wr2; far more than I had expected !)
At present I look much forward to Chile where a package to Jamie has already arrived w. no prob. at all. There should be only 12 days left in Argentina and admidst the injuries there is exitement that we are heading once more to friendly Chile :-) !
But ofcourse the situation is not good for the run at all. Still the thing to do is to focus on the possible solutions and the positives: That the short stages helps gather musclestrength for the 4000m. high mountainpass I have in front of me. A challenge and a part of the run which I have looked forward to since the start in Nordkapp in Norway :-))
