Knee problems still there and I had to take another very short day with only 20km. At the moment I am trying to quickly find out what the reason is behind this problem and see what options I have to help the body recover the injury and removing the cause of it.
There is a couple of obvious possibilities; some I can do something about, others not.
- It could in part be due to the sudden drop in temperatures the last few days. The body and especially tendons and joints hasnt been used to chilly temperatures in more than a year now so it could play a role.
- It could be due to the mostly cement or concret surface wich is used for the pavement on the side of the road here in Southern USA. Cement is one of the hardest surfases to run on, much harder than fx. asfalt, so this would have an impact also on the knees.
- It could very well be partly due to the precaution I have begon to take reg. the concrete surfaces: I am trying to run more on the highway itself to get a chance to run on the asfalt to save the legs a little bit of the impact. But... Running just on the side of the road (I still have to be carefull and keep a little space between the traffic and myself ;-) means that I almost always have a camber/un-even surface to run on. Running on un-even tarmac nearly all the time gives the knees and achilles tendons an angle on each impact instead of a flat landing - wich could easily give a slight twist to the knees for each running step.
- Finally it could also be a result of the accumulation of the km's during these runs. By now the total km in world run 2 is getting towards 33 000km and having the 26 000km from world run 1 in the legs too probably doesnt make it easier on the body (plus about 29years of competetive running from 1500meters to 6day racing...).
The first things I can and will do something about immideately. The last - a little bit harder to do much about ;-) Except appreciate the Fantastic memories that comes with such a background :-)
NB: The endomondo gps-tracking system shut down about 2km's from the finish just to make todays short run even more 'interesting'. I first noticed it nearly at the finish and re-started it. Hopefully it should be working ok again tomorrow.
