30 miles & a hair-cut !
Its 3 days since the 50mile trail competetion down in the Everglades (2.place/ 8:45h.) and the first day that the legs are back to full strength. The two previous days I've had some troubles w. a broken toe from the race - its been broken before so it happens easily by now as for example when hitting stones or rocks in a trail race. Late last evening I got myself together to put it into place (see yesterdays photo's ;-) and today was absolutely painless and once again the daily run was a Joy !!
During the 5hour run, plus various food water and hair-cut breaks, I couldnt help notice that Im by now running through "political contry": As most probably are aware the republican caucus where they select their candidate for the November presidential election here in USA has now reached Florida and there is heavy campaining in Tv & newspapers. Along my route on US Highway one, Northbound, there were posters for the different candidates as well as flags nearly half of the 49km's ;-)
Its good to see, not least to a political scientist as me, that democracy is put into action on a local level - by each state having their say on the election of the party's candindate. But at the same time I have to mention that it appeared - atleast in the tv-debates - that the top candidates used more time attacking eachother than anything else. Loosely counted I would guess that about 65% of the 'air time' was used on rethorics reguarding the other candidates as well as on 'cleaning themselves' of accusation from their opponents, 20% on attacking the politics of the current president; leaving about 15% of their time to describe what their own politics actually are. I hope that it occupies more than 15% of their attention ;-)
This world run 2 as well as my first world run is no political run. But I was delighted to hear a precidential speach in the evening much more focused on how to solve the problems that the USA are facing at the moment (many similarities w. the current European Union's financial challenges). To me there are some big differences between the USA I saw while running actoss the contry West to East back in 2005 and the USA I am now experiensing here in 2012. Yet that will have to wait for the reports to follow :-)
- Also much more down to earth things than exercising my academic background are part of the daily running. As for example getting a much needed haircut ;-) At about 25km after the start in Hobe Sound I saw a "Barber Shop" sign right at the roadside in Palm City. I took the oppotunity and stopped for a 20min. haircut wich surely make it easier to continue the run in the humid weather down here in Florida !
