Country: Peru
Start 09:40am., 19c, allmost clear and light wind, at km-stone "280" on hwy. 1. Finish 16:11pm., 23c and same, at km-stone "235" on hwy. 1.
Today the legs actually fealt better than yesterday despite suddenly stepping up the distance ! So I pushed on as far as the fatigue would allow and got 45km..
Our finishpoint today is near the city of Pisco which holds many positions in Peruian history ! It once was the base of liberator and revolutionary, Jose de San Martin (liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru from the spanish regimes which held them down since they were discovered by europeans in the 1500-century and became spanish colonies). Interesting, the liberation of South America was mainly due to two figues: Martin above and the notorious Simon de Bolivar - the latter liberating the continent from the North working Southward, the first from the South working Northbound. They met at a meeting where the happenings are unknown, but following this secret meeting in Equador, Martin left South America for France and never set foot on the continent again.
This is though far from Pisco's only signifigance. It has several archeological sites dating back to the pre-inca period, mainly the advanced "Paracas" culture, as well as beeing the main access point to the nearby wildlife reserve Reserva Nacional de Paracas which hosts a multitude of sea animals and rare birds.
However, to Peruians, I have a strong suspecions that the most signifikant trade of Pisco is that its the central region for producing the famous "Pisco grape" which goes to make the South American classical drink, "Pisco" ! Even in Chile this was about as celebrated as beer probably is it in Europe !
And I have to say its also a very pleasant city to stay in for the night :-)
....
NB: To make sure that people can follow her extra efforts Sarah Barnett has asked that the reports note her additional distances so there will be a section under each report with her distance during the time she visits :-)
Sarah Barnett:
Same start,
Finish at exit-sign "Pisco" on hwy. 1, 17:05pm.
Total 50km.
- a very Strong effort, and safe to say its past the point in wr2 where I can put in these kind of distances each stage. But its an inspiration and a boost of energy to share the run with another runner !! As always anyone are most wellcome to join for short or long at any point of the run they whish !
