2009-04-26:Distance today: 40.0 km (Accumulated: 12843.8 km)
Elapsed time: 04:04:18
Country: Africa
Start 04:39am., at red coca-cola sign "Gondar 320km/ Addis Abeba 228km" (?) in amaric (I dont read amaric fully yet), at S.end of Dajen village on the main rd. to Addis Abeba. 07c, dark and l. wind. Finish 09:46pm., at Japanese - Ethiopian road construction sign "Rehabilitation of trunk road, section: Addis Abeba - Goha Tsion" at beginning of Goha Tsion, N. end, on the main rd. to Addis Abeba. 18c, a few clouds and med. wind.
YES !! :-)
Blue Nile Canyon cleared !
1500m. alt. down over 20km and 20km w. 1500. alt. up the winding serpentine road :-))
down time 1:36h., up-time2:22h.
Start alt. 2400m. Bottom alt. 1000m. Alt. at top/finish 2463m.
- As you can see the 'down' time was allmost 1h. faster than the 'up' time. But all in all not too bad an effort, I think :-) I had expected 3h. for the up run w. virtual no flat parts on the last 19km. But the two previous days of 20km turned out to be a good team decition: Tommy 'the gun' and I had debated how to attack & prepare the stage. With 12 000km, 4 deserts and 3 small mountainchains in the legs allready we knew I could have a whole day struggeling both w. the steep down section as well as the ascend up towards the South plateau wich leads to Addis Abeba.
Also the car seems to overheat on steep uphills and broke down twice when we testdrowe the stage !
Solution: to start by night and finish in the morning before car & runner overheats. It worked even better than expected :-)
Now its time for a pizza; if we can find it !!
