Highway horrors !
After yesterdays stage that I enjoyed much this one was one to forget quick. If I could.
When people ask if Africa isnt a concearn - and South America, my reply is that while it takes logistics and long preparation, and certainly is to be taken seriously, they are not the most dangerous. That is the European and N. American highways !
A day like today, running on a 20-40cm broad gravel/grass rough shoulder w. trucks and cars coming at between 100 and 130km/hour - and w. a steel barrier preventing you from an easy escape if the 50cm gap between the stroller andthe trucks isnt enough. That is not my favorite part of the run.
The rain and at times heavy windgusts means poor visibilty for all and the cold eventually slow the reactions down for my part and muscle stiffness makes for clumsy maneauvers on the little margin of error.
Physically its not bad (though not comfortable to push the stroller in the grass/mud) but psycologically its a nightmare where you have to settle with that this could be the last minutif you or any car make a mistake (today there was a huge accident just 1km up - see livepic.) .
To let go of a mental stress of that caliber takes weeks. I hope that I'll soon have the usual motivation back and be wise enough to avoid the hwy. next time - even if it means extra km or days.
