Police - the Romanian way !
Another stage in Stunning Scenery (please see the pic. from the Live coverage). A little cultural example among many of why Romania is turning my preconception of the contry up-side-down:
Near the finish I enter a small shop/cafe to buy water and chocolate. From the atm-maschines I am giftet w. large notes in "lei" wich is toomuch for the lady at the counter (a chair, a little desk & a calculator..). In enters two policemen. One of them takes a look at the situation, opens his wallet and hands me the correct change and takes 2 small packets of cigarettes from the shelf as a payment from the shop.
- All w. a Clint Eastwood expression a'la "We aint saveages around here".
He nods as I run on towards the mountains and my evening tent. Somewhere between embarrasment of my previous idea of Easteuropean police and a smile.
- Dont allways take tv as the truth about other contries and cultures :-)
Romania does have lifestyles that could be 50y. old. A way of interest and unconditional help probably gone most other places; w. more smiles 'on the street' that I have seen anywhere else ! But it also has sudden 100percent western standard. And a courious mix of modern and ancient. Roads that beats most in west (! Why ?? Eu ?). Lets see
