Jacals ?

When heading into the remote mountains and forrest region leading up to the Turkish border we had a bit of unexpected wildlife visiting at our campsite in a small clearing in the woods.

A flock of big deers came up along the tents and around midnight in perfect silence under the stars above something started to howl. First far away, then closing in from the other side of the clearing. We often hear foxes and wild dogs but it was not those; the howl more high pitch and drawn out.
I guess we both lay in our tents and thourght that this sound a lot like wolves. I decided it was a flock of jacaks and had my nights sleep ;-)
